As a rule of thumb, you should aim to wear something clean, simple, and fairly modest for your uni interview outfits. The level of formality will depend slightly on the university, but I’d always opt for business formal if you’re not sure. You should go with pretty neutral makeup and a neat look for your hair.

With all of these, I’d also recommend bringing a large purse that has enough room to hold copies of your application materials and a notebook.

For my PhD interview, I wore a light grey Reiss pencil skirt suit (this one is similar), a white sleeveless blouse (again, here’s a similar one), and my Rothy’s flats. I straightened my hair so it looked neat (even in the humidity!) and wore minimal brown eyeliner, eyebrow gel, and some mascara.

Below I’ve compiled some shopable, sample outfits for further inspiration!

Uni interview outfits #1: Blouse, cigarette trousers, heels, and a blazer

A blouse, slim trousers, heels, and a blazer is a solid, standard college interview outfit choice. Make sure the trousers aren’t too tight and make sure your blouse isn’t see through. If you wear a sleeveless blouse like I did, I’d also make sure to keep the jacket on the whole time so you still look professional.

What to wear to a college interview #2: Pencil skirt suit

A pencil skirt suit is a classic option and was my go-to for uni and job interviews. If you want something slightly more casual, choose one that’s not black or navy and pair it with a neutral, but coloured blouse. You can also dress it down by wearing flats instead of heels.

Uni interview outfits #3: A tailored midi-length dress

A tailored dress is an easy way to look polished and put-together without much effort. Pair it with a blazer or a cardigan. If you go for the cardigan, I’d suggest wearing heels so it looks a bit more formal, though.

What to wear to a college interview #4: A looser-fitting dress

If you’re not comfortable in a more tailored dress, a looser fitting one is a good option. You should be able to get away with one that’s slightly shorter as well if it’s looser. I’d pair a looser dress with a blazer so it looks more put-together.

Uni interview outfits #5: Pencil skirt and jumper

I know not everyone is a fan of the jumper look, but I still am! A pencil skirt, jumper, and heels is a classic look.
